The Battle Has Begun

I’ve got to keep up a daily report on my children this week, so apologies if you’ve come to appreciate my random and infrequent posts. But I can’t stand it. The pent up energy I’ve built from worrying about my little ones has to explode somewhere! I’ve got 2 people living in my head right now: Dr. Zibners and Mommy. Dr. Zibners says that Eva and Zoe are fine. Mommy says they are near death. Mommy is very happy that both babies are smiling today. Dr. Zibners is counting how many ounces each baby has had to drink. Dr. Zibners knows that bronchiolitis doesn’t respond to medications or inhalers. Mommy wants to try anyway.

Fortunately I just had my asthma medication refilled yesterday in between chest x-rays and coughing “samples” into a cup. The plain old rescue inhaler, usually albuterol in the US, can also be given to little ones using a special spacer with a mask. Might make them jittery but won’t hurt. Might help. Worth a shot, I figured. So I went to my pharmacist and bought a “pediatric” kit for the inhaler. Then I came home, put it all together and attacked child #1. She was asleep, but I got a good seal with the mask around her nose and mouth and hit the puffer twice. She screamed for the 30-60 seconds I held it in place but I reasoned that this was simply getting the medication into her lungs faster. Then child #2 was up. Of course she started immediately crying because why would anyone want to disturb the drama queen? However, upon realizing that she was receiving both attention and complete confirmation that she is, indeed, really and truly ill, she began smiling widely, looking around to make sure Oma and Opa could see how sick she is. Naturally Dr. Zibners listened before and after with a stethoscope. Dr. Zibners isn’t sure it made a difference. Mommy disagrees. Clearly action is better than inaction, no? Mommy 1: Dr. Zibners 0

"WHAT I LIKED: This book is written in a funny, down to earth way that doesn't make you feel like an idiot. I really would have appreciated something like this when my kids were really little and I freaked out over everything they put in their mouths. It has a scenario/question and answer format, with clear answers on when not to panic and when to call 911."
