Update Week of January 25
This Week’s Hot Topic
I once again begin with an apology for missing last week. Hopefully you’ll forgive me when you hear why. My daughter, Zoe, was born on Friday morning. Now this might confuse those of you who have been paying attention because you know that Eva was born in October. Yes, I have 2 little girls who are 13 weeks and 2 days apart in age. Some people (like my father) think that I’ve completely lost my mind. At the very least, family photos are a little confusing right now. I’ve got one baby grinning at the camera and her sister, who is very close to the same size, curled up in a little newborn lump, oblivious to her surroundings.
But their differences don’t stop there. I never truly believed in the individuality of the small infant until this year. Eva sleeps with her head to the left; Zoe keeps hers to the right. Eva is blond with big blue eyes; Zoe has a mop of black hair and dark little peepers. Eva used to sound like a little mewing cat; Zoe makes deep baby dinosaur noises. These are expected differences. I get that. But I wasn’t totally prepared for one baby (Eva) to take 45 minutes to eat 2 ounces while the other sucks down the same quantity in under 5.
So this week I am just sending you a message to embrace your child’s individuality. If she’s stubborn and opinionated, that’s okay because she’ll grow up to speak her mind. If she’s loving and cuddly, enjoy it now because it will likely end when she gets older. Most importantly be grateful for the opportunity to parent your little one. Try chanting,”I’m grateful, I’m grateful,” as she destroys your new bath towels with your favorite lipstick or locks herself in the bathroom with a full tube of toothpaste, your new mascara and a silk blouse.

"WHAT I LIKED: This book is written in a funny, down to earth way that doesn't make you feel like an idiot. I really would have appreciated something like this when my kids were really little and I freaked out over everything they put in their mouths. It has a scenario/question and answer format, with clear answers on when not to panic and when to call 911."
